“This 36" by 60" oil painting, titled The Good American, is a contemporary response to the parable of The Good Samaritan. The viewer’s eye is led to the figure standing on the side of the road with a blank cardboard sign to communicate with the drivers; the first-person point of view (seen rolling up the window and closing the space between them) symbolizes the priest declining to help the man on the path in the Good Samaritan parable. In the left-hand mirror, the glass barely reflects vehicles behind the first car, sticking money out their window. The money is a comparison to the Samaritan’s act of kindness toward the weak man by taking him somewhere to heal and sleep. When painting, I intended to keep certain aspects blurry and out of focus to relate to how society currently handles homelessness and its own individual moral dilemmas regarding assisting the people they see on the side of the road. I wanted to emphasize the complexity of these feelings because of my own struggles in determining what specific action or outcome can bring the most peace out of every possible scenario.”
